Condition 1!!!!

May 31, 2006, today was our first "Condition 1" of the season. This means that either the wind, visibility or temperature (without wind) were extreme enough for this to be called. This mornings Condition 1 was based on wind (greater than 75 knots) & visibility (less than 100 feet). What happens is everything stops, you stay where you are and if you must go somewhere you clip yourself to the ropes. I walked from where I live to the main building this morning while attached to the rope. Much like a giant dog run! Very excting times on ice.

Spelling Bee

We had a real old fashioned Spelling Bee last night here at McMurdo

this is what I look like reading a dictionary trying to get smart for the competition

we numbered everybody and these were the 2 in my seating group, Harry & Phil

I got to the 3rd round and then misspelled "polypropylene" and I was even wearing some!!!

An event does not happen at McMurdo without costumes, these 3 were the spelling judges

all the nervous spellers!
